Money
Hello,
My name is Aida and I’ve decided to make this podcast to help you listen to authentic material, spoken by a native speaker in colloquial Arabic. If you’re a beginner to pre-intermediate, then this is the right place for you to be to improve your Arabic listening and speaking skills.
In this series, you will be listening to a different topic each time. The purpose is to provide you with the necessary vocabulary on a wide range of topics, such as family, hobbies, studying, travelling and so on.
Today I’m going to speak about money.
The questions I’ll be discussing are: How do people perceive money? Why is it important to save money? Can everyone save? Does money equal happiness?
Money is something we all need to live a decent life. Some people want to make loads of money and be rich so that they never have to worry about money. Other people don’t mind living an average life, as long as they have all the essential necessities, such as food, clothing, a comfortable home, and a means of transport.
Money is considered indispensable if we want to live a decent life. However, some people make it their goal to make as much money as possible. They would like to buy expensive brands and own villas in more than one country. Other people begin to compete with rich families, and it becomes an obsession to own the most expensive cars, clothes, and accessories.
Some people are very good at saving and managing their money. They never need to ask for help from others. They are not rich, but always manage to buy everything that is need for their families and houses. Others find it very difficult to manage their money. They tend to spend more money than they actually have. These people often have problems and might even end up being poor. They are aware that they shouldn’t spend so much but cannot stop themselves.
It is important to save money because sometimes we will need larger amounts to spend on things such as education fees, health issues or hospital fees.
Money is important to live a comfortable life, but money does not equal happiness. There are many rich people who are not happy, and there are a lot of people who are not rich who are happy. Perhaps they value other aspects of life more, such as health, family, friends, and a job they enjoy.
Now let me give you an example of what people might say in reply to questions related to money.
Money is important but is not the most important thing is life. If you have lots of money, but have health issues that cannot be resolved, you will not be able to enjoy the money you have. Obviously, worrying about money all the time does not lead to an enjoyable life and might lead to many family problems. Therefore, I believe we should all strive to earn enough money to live comfortable lives but should not turn earning money into an obsession. If we earn sufficiently well, we should be able to save a little money each month, so that we can avoid financial problems.
I believe money is important not only to live a comfortable life, but also to be able to afford the things in life that make us happier people, such as travelling and practising our hobbies. Travelling can be quite expensive, but nowadays it is easier to find cheap offers for tickets and accommodation online.
If I were rich, I could spend more money on charitable causes. Many people are less fortunate than we are. Not everyone has had the chance to achieve what they wanted in life due to uncontrollable circumstances. If we have enough money, we should try to help others who are struggling in life to feed their children, educate them or cover their health bills.
Also, if you are the kind of person who struggles to put money aside, try to remember that you might not need everything you buy. Sometimes we buy things we could do without. If we manage to give up on certain things that we don’t really need each month and save the money we would have spent instead, we will eventually manage to buy the things we might really need.

So, that was an example of things we might say in relation to money. I hope you have found this episode useful.
