People's most common fears

Hello everyone! This is Aida with a new episode of Learn Arabic with Ease at the pre-intermediate level. In this series, I will be speaking about a different topic every time, suitable for this specific level, and obviously at a slower pace than normal to make it easier for you to understand the content.

Today, I’ll be speaking about people’s most common fears. And by this, I don’t mean the common phobias that we always hear about, such as the fear of heights or spiders. But rather the fears that most of us share that might hold us back and prevent us from living a happy, satisfying life.

The first of these fears is the fear of failure. Many of us have good ideas that pass through our heads, but we tend to push them away. We convince ourselves that we don’t have time for them, that the ideas themselves aren’t good enough, or even worse, that we are not able to implement them. The fear of failure could be related to our studies, jobs, or even our relationships. Our fears might prevent us from pursuing a better job or obtaining a higher degree, for example. Rather than failing, many people prefer to avoid trying new things that could be quite rewarding in the long run.

There is a prevailing misconception that failing is shameful. We’re afraid that other people will judge us negatively if we fail. As a matter of fact, the fear of failing may result in two things: First, we might avoid trying out new things and experimenting new ideas that could end up being very successful; and second, we might miss out on learning valuable lessons that failure teaches us, which might help us find success and happiness.

Another common fear that many people share is the fear of something bad happening. We probably have this fear because we know that bad things actually do happen. We see bad things happen to others and worry that they may also happen to us. It is important to realise, however, that if we spend our lives worrying about things that might go wrong, then we are not actually living in the present moment. What could help us with this particular fear is to keep in mind that we can usually find solutions to our problems. If we start to look at problems as challenges, rather than as something that weighs us down, we will gradually stop worrying so much. Also, we need to remind ourselves that many good things happen to us during our lives. If we learn to notice all the good things we are blessed with in our lives, we will stop focusing on what might go wrong.

A third common fear of people is the fear of loneliness. Studies have shown that loneliness can be just as harmful to our health as smoking. Loneliness leads us to overthink situations. Some people might avoid moving out of their parents’ house and becoming independent for fear of loneliness, while others might remain in unhealthy relationships for the same reason. Many people obsess while using social media because they want to feel that they are constantly connected to the world, while forgetting that is it important to have actual direct relations and interactions with people.

The fourth fear I’ll be talking about is the fear of change. We live in a rapidly changing world, where we need to adapt to all sorts of new situations. We may find that we are forced to leave our countries to find better job opportunities or leave an unhealthy relationship. Sometimes change can be overwhelming and, whenever possible, we may try to avoid it altogether. It’s important to remember that change is not necessarily a bad thing, and that it could add new taste and excitement to our lives. We will most often be surprised at the new happiness that change can bring with it. Trying out new things enriches our life experiences and give us new perspectives on issues.
